Also headed to Iraq but not as soon as the Marines, are members of Georgia's National Guard. The 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team was recently alerted of their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.
As WSAV's Military Reporter Alice Massimi explains, since then they've been busy getting ready for their trip overseas.
It was only a couple of years ago that members of Georgia’s National Guard were gearing up for their year long deployment to Iraq. Now they are back at it again.
Less than three years after deploying to Iraq the unit will soon leave their families for Afghanistan.
“I was excited. I've been deployed but not to Iraq or Afghanistan so I've been anxious to go. I didn't get to go with the brigade last time they went,” explains First Lieutenant Russell Dasher.
On this deployment Dasher will lead a platoon of about 30 to 40 soldiers. He says the pressure's on.
“I am sure they start to take it more serious, to learn as much as they can and get as proficient as they can in the task,” says Dasher.
For Sergeant Julian Tucker, this will be his second trip into a war zone, news his wife was not exactly happy to hear.
“She was like well you know I just got to see you but then she was happy too because the finances are much better and it's stability,” says Tucker.
Tucker and Dasher say they're not surprised by the unit being alerted of their upcoming deployment, they it's all in a day's work.
“It’s what we train for all the time and I mean that is our job so its what I want to do and its an honor to serve my country,” says Dasher.
According to the Department of Defense the unit is scheduled to leave next summer. While deployed they will be training Afghan National Security Forces.
