A resident of an apartment complex where two off-duty DeKalb County police officers were shot and killed early today says she was awakened by the gunshots but thought nothing about it at the time.
Patreka Anderson says she lives in a high-crime area where drugs and prostitution are commonplace.
In her words, "We always hear shooting. I didn't think that was any big deal."
Police Chief Terrell Bolton says a tow truck driver called police to the scene of the shooting around 12:40 a.m. He says the arriving officers found the first two officers down.
Bolton says one officer died at the scene; the other was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.
Bolton says the shooting appears to be an ambush.
Authorities have not released the names of the officers who were killed. Bolton says one had two years experience and the other had four years.
Bolton says authorities are looking for at least two suspects.
He is urging the men to turn themselves in.
