BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) - A former managing editor of The Beaufort Gazette and Associated Press newsman has died in a car wreck.

The Beaufort County Coroner's Office says 63-year-old William Stracener was killed this afternoon shortly after his 2004 Honda was struck by another vehicle on U.S. 278 near Bluffton.

Troopers say Stracener was driving between two private driveways and was not wearing his seat belt.

Stracener was a native of East Orange, New Jersey, and a graduate of Wake Forest University. He worked for the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Journal and United Press International before joining the AP in South Carolina in 1984.

Stracener worked for the Beaufort newspaper after serving as correspondent in charge of the AP's Springfield, Illinois, office.

He most recent job was as a public relations consultant with Anderson Communications.
