John McCain-- the primary winner tonight in Florida. The state has the largest number of GOP delegates up for grabs so far in the race.. 57-total. That makes it a big win for John McCain, giving his campaign much more momentum ahead of the Super Tuesday primaries.
Let's take a look at the results:
McCain won with 35%
Mitt Romney 31%.
Rudy Giuliani edged out Mike Huckabee for third place, with 15% and 14% respectively.
It was a critical race for marginal candidates like Giuliani who had pinned his presidential run on the Sunshine State. McCain and Giuliani advisers say the former New York Mayor will endorse McCain in California later this week, so Giuliani is likely to drop out of the race. But tonight belonged to John McCain.
He spoke to supporters in Miami.
“Our victory may have not reached landslide proportions, but it is sweet nonetheless,” McCain said tonight.
On the Democrats’ side: Hillary Rodham Clinton has won the Florida Primary.. with 50 % of the vote. Obama earned 33%, and Edwards got 14%. The problem is.. those votes don't count toward the nomination. Clinton is pledging to lobby for Florida's delegates to be seated at the national convention this summer.
