The City of Savannah plans to serve $348,198.00 worth of free lunches between now and August as part of an annual program designed to make sure kids eat at least one balanced meal each day.
With increases in the price of gas and basic staples like milk, the price of each free lunch jumped around 10 percent from 2007 to 2008.
The Department of Agriculture is expected to cover the extra $30,500 cost this year.
More information on the Summer Lunch Program from the City of Savannah:
The purpose of the Summer Lunch Program is to see that children, ages 18 years of age and younger, enjoy proper nutrition as they run and play during their summer break. Children need a good lunch for those long afternoons of activity. The City of Savannah is proud to offer the picnic lunch program for its 37th summer at more than 95 open sites
throughout the City.
The picnic-style lunch will always feature a sandwich, one fruit, and one vegetable or two fruits, and 8oz. of milk. The lunch will always meet the standards of the National School Lunch Program.
This program is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and is overseen here in Georgia by Bright From the Start: Department of Early Care and Learning located in Atlanta.
All children are welcome.
