They're going green in the Lowcountry and it has nothing to do with Saint Patrick's Day. Tuesday was the first time cameras were allowed inside the HGTV Green Home at Tradition Hilton Head off I-95 in Hardeeville. You can visit the home starting march 24th. The house is the first of its kind for the channel, equipped with all the latest environmentally friendly additions.
The plants, the pillows, and even the toothbrush. The house is green from the ground up. But the funny thing is, it has nothing to do with the color.
"Green is about indoor air quality, water conservation, energy efficiency, really minimizing your impact on our world,” HGTV House-planner Jack Thomasson said.
It’s about turning something old into something new.
"We used a little bit of left over wood from this project to build this bed. And going through dumpsters and Habitat for Humanity which has some old wood there- I used that to build this- so it didn't take any new trees to build the furniture,” builder David Brown of Bluffton said.
You may have to shell out some green to go green, but the experts suggest you start small and work your way up.
"Change the linens on your bed to something organic,” Thomasson said.
It's a concept that can keep not only the environment but yourself healthy.
"Like using soy-based materials that don't have the toxics as far as the colors and as far as the tints, as far as the primers, those are going to help us in our health over time and so we're not continually inhaling all these toxins,” Carter Oosterhouse of HGTV said.
And although this marks the first Green Home giveaway, they hope it won't be the only green-home in the Lowcountry.
