More than one million people in the United States are living with AIDS - some of them right here in coastal Georgia.
Today, many walked to raise money and awareness for the disease -- and the efforts that still need to be made to find a cure.
About 300 people took part in the Walk for Life in Forsyth Park. It's an annual event and participants are helping the Union Mission show its commitment to ending HIV and AIDS.
“Our main goal was just to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and the effects it's having on our community, and also, to show support to our family members and friends and any other individuals that are actually facing the reality of HIV and AIDS from day-to-day,” said Jamila Hudson with the Union Mission.
In Georgia, more than 29,000 people are currently living with HIV and AIDS. Nearly 30 percent of them are women, and the majority of people impacted are African Americans, often living below the poverty level.
Several area organizations offer confidential HIV testing, some for free. In Savannah-- you can call My Brothaz Home on Price Street at 912-231-8002, or contact Union Mission on Fahm Street at 912-236-7423. Another option is to contact your local health department.
