Two colleges in West Palm Beach say they're getting rid of the trays in the dining halls to cut back on waste and curtail overeating.
Dining hall managers at Palm Beach Atlantic University and Northwood University say the trays allow students to pile on too many extras.
Colleges nationwide are cutting lunch trays for health and environmental reasons. The University of Florida is warning students that their dining halls will try going tray-less for a week next month.
A spokesman for Sodexo, which runs Northwood's food services, says cutting the trays reduces food costs by about $5,600 annually because students take less food without the trays.
