Oglethorpe Mall Goes Green

»  Comments | Post a Comment

These days it's all about going green.

You've heard of what you can do to make your home more eco-friendly, but what about your business?

News Three's Alice Massimi found one spot that's doing what they can to save water, energy, and money.

Things are looking greener at Oglethorpe Mall - and that's not because people are spending more money. The mall is, as they say, going green.

“I think one is it makes good sense. Everybody needs to be conserving, everybody needs to be looking at where we can save,” explains General Manager Phillip McConnell.

So the mall is doing numerous things.

“What we've done is we've installed motion detectors in all the officers in here and a lot of the back hallways that don't get a lot of use,” this way the lights are only on when someone is in the room says McConnell.

All their notepads are made out of recycled paper and they're replacing all their light bulbs with new energy-efficient ones.

Since the 2007 drought the mall actually turned off their fountains. They say this saves them hundreds of gallons of water that used to simply just be evaporated.

Speaking of water, they are slowly putting in dual flush toilets which use much less water than the ones we're used to, and they've gotten rid of their sprinkler system.

They're also encouraging the stores to be earth friendly.

“As new tenants come in we are requiring them to put in energy efficient units and they want to they want the savings just like everyone else,” says McConnell.

The mall is asking them to use what's left behind, ceiling tiles, metal studs, lighting fixtures and they're having them recycle.

“They compact or fold their boxes down flat and they insert them through this slot,” McConnell points out as he shows us the recycling area.

Simple changes that are already saving them between fifteen to twenty five hundred dollars a month...and they say they're only scratching the surface.
