Savannah to Revise Liquor Ordinance for Restaurants

Keeping booze out of the hands of minors in Savannah is proving harder than city leaders thought.

In 2006, Savannah City Council banned those under 21 from bars but allowed them to continue to enter restaurants that serve alcohol. Then some of those started acting like bars with bands and liquor but no food service.

So now, the city is trying to get under-agers out of those bar-like restaurants. They've written a new law that allows "restaurants with entertainment" to serve those under 21. But the youngsters must be kicked out 30 minutes before the band cranks up or the kitchen closes or any other bar-like behavior.

Today the city is finding out what business owners think about the issue. In a meeting at the Civic Center this afternoon, leaders will explain the plan and listen as owners give their input.

Savannah City Council will get an official first look at the new law Thursday during their regular meeting at 2 p.m. at City Hall.
