Forsyth Park Playground Closes for Fort Renovations

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Beginning today, the east playground at Forsyth Park in downtown Savannah will be closed for the renovation of the Fort. Fencing will be installed and work crews and machinery will begin descending on the park and remain until its completion next year. The west playground will remain open.

The Fort, which was used by the Savannah Volunteer Guards for artillery exercises in the years leading up to World War I, will be restored and renovated into an attractive, useful public space. Once completed, the Forsyth Fort will include a visitor’s area, café, meeting rooms, and restrooms. A unique retractable bandshell will be added to the south side of the fort, fulfilling the promise of an outdoor venue made to voters during the 1993 SPLOST referendum.
