Leaders broke ground on a project that will bring a new lake to the Liberty City Neighborhood on Savannah’s Westside.
“We’ve been working on this for fourteen years,” explains Liberty City Neighbor and City Council Member Clifton Jones.
Jones along with other members of the Liberty City Community Organization shoveled dirt from a ceremonial mound this morning to officially kick off the construction of a new neighborhood park.
Workers actually started draining and digging in the former borrow pit off Mills B. Lane Boulevard about a week and a half ago. The pit was left after construction of the bridge over the CSX tracks here more than a decade ago. While the site often filled with rain water, it was little more than a muddy hole. Workers say once they are done, it will be a proper lake with fountains, fish and walking trails.
While the city is chipping about a half million in tax dollars, the neighborhood raised money for the project as well, earning enough to purchase some of the land needed. Chatham County leaders helped as well donating much of the property where the park will go.
Now that construction is underway, city workers say it should be done by November.
