Drive Restocks Local Food Bank Shelves

information from Second Harvest:

The 2008 Letter Carriers Food Drive was successful in helping America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia stock the shelves. On Saturday, May 10th, 64,550 pounds of donated food arrived at Second Harvest to be sorted by volunteers.

“When residents of the Savannah area realized the critical need at our local food bank, they responded with open arms.” stated Mary Jane Crouch, Executive Director.

Letter carriers not only delivered the mail last Saturday, but they also collected donated food left out by residents. Volunteers helped sort the donated goods and restock the shelves.

“What the volunteer did in about four hours, would take weeks for our staff to do,” says Crouch. “I want to thank everyone who took part in this food drive and let them know how much their support will help children, senior citizens, and working poor families fight the battle of hunger this summer.”

America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia will continue to need volunteer groups to sort the donated food and stock the shelves and also needs groups to conduct food drives. For information, call Karen Franklin at (912) 236-6750 ext. 12.
