A fire that heavily damaged the offices of Consolidated Field Systems on Westgate Boulevard last night left the business in the dark this week. Firefighters responded to the fire around 9:45 Sunday night and fought a difficult fire for most of the evening. Crews contained the blaze to the office area of a 100,000 square foot facility, but the offices were virtually destroyed.
Smoke from the fire blanketed the Ogeechee Road and 37th Street corridors and firefighters fielded other calls spurred by the smoke in the area. The fire was contained by 10:30, but interior collapse forced firefighters to fight the fire from outside the collapse zone. The fire was considered under control by 11:20 pm.
Fire investigators from Savannah Fire & Emergency Services and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) began investigating the scene today. The instability within the building has slowed the fire cause determination, but investigators will continue their efforts this week. They are considering this a criminal investigation and have not ruled out arson as a cause. Anyone who has information or may have witnessed activity around 23 Westgate Boulevard last evening should call Crimestoppers at (912) 234-2020, Savannah Fire & Emergency Services Investigation Unit at (912) 644-5958, or the Georgia Arson Hotline at (800) 282-5804
