Update from SCMPD as of 5:30 pm:
Savannah, GA (November 26, 2008): The driver of the gray pick-up truck that hit a bicyclist on Highway 80 has been arrested. A Good Samaritan followed the vehicle after the incident to Tybee, and informed the driver that he had hit a man on a bike. The driver turned himself in at the Islands Precinct.
Charged with leaving the scene of an accident and improper passing is 31 year-old Shawn Edward Donnelly of Savannah.
Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are asking anyone who witnessed a hit-and-run this afternoon on Highway 80 just before Johnny Mercer Boulevard to call them.
At about 3:30 p.m. a 45-year old man was riding his bicycle in the bike lane traveling eastbound. He was hit by a grey minivan, which did not stop. The man was transported to the hospital with fractures to his arm. Police believe the van will likely have damage to the right side-mirror. This is the second time in six months that a bicyclist has been injured on Highway 80 by a hit-and-run driver.
Highway 80 has been busy all day today and police hope that someone driving by witnessed what happened and will contact police at Precinct 5 at 898-3252, or call CrimeStoppers at 234-2020.
Police also remind all motorists to obey all speed limits and take your time getting to your holiday destinations. Police and HEAT units will be out in full force this weekend, so police also remind motorists not to drink and drive.
