One man is in custody facing aggravated assault and a bevy of other charges after firing at an officer during an early morning chase downtown.
The incident began after a fight at Frozen Paradise ended in gunfire. Police have determined one group of males bumped into another in the parking lot around 2:45 a.m. Words were exchanged, and suspects from one group fired several shots at the car of the second group. Police in the area heard the shots and responded immediately. The suspects who shot at the car fled the scene in a dark colored SUV. The victims in the other car were not injured, but the vehicle had several bullet holes in it.
A lookout was placed on the suspect vehicle, and officers spotted a blue Chevy Tahoe at Bay and Warner Streets just before 3:00 a.m. and gave chase. When the vehicle stopped in the area of Scarborough and Exley Streets, one of the officers saw the passenger exit the vehicle with a gun in his hand. The passenger ran from police firing one shot at the officers in pursuit. Officers did not return fire, but chased the suspect and caught him as he was trying to climb over a fence. They recovered the gun a short time later. The driver of the vehicle escaped on foot.
Facing charges is 30-year-old Jabari Robinson of Savannah. Robinson was transported to the Chatham County Detention Center. Police are still searching for the driver of the vehicle.
