As the presidential election nears, some of our Lowcountry students are learning more about politics and where they fit in the picture. Tuesday morning Ridgeland Middle School students took part in a mock-election using the "real" voting machines.
The final tally at the end of the day won't make life any different for these students come Wednesday. But, they're sticking to the slogan of “every vote counts,” keeping that attitude could form the habits their teachers are working toward.
"Just to get the students to start thinking about politics, to start thinking about how important it is for them to be involved and to be active in their county and their country,” Guidance Counselor April Finley said.
Casting their presidential vote is only one of the ways they're learning the political process. Besides hearing from local leaders about issues that affect them right here at home, they're realizing the challenges that come with being the one in charge.
"You have to deal with hurricanes, terrorist attacks...I can't imagine how much stress can be put on a president,” student Shelby Davis said.
They want one who will make changes, though. Likely, they've heard this conversation around the dinner table; most are calling for lower gas prices.
"Especially with Christmas and Halloween coming up and people want to go visit family and stuff,” Joseph Grantham said.
While law says they've got to sit out come November 4th, nothing holds them back from exercising their patriotism.
"I hope that everybody makes the right decision and votes. Take your time and do what's right,” student Kenneth Brayboy said.
The votes are counted and the newly elected president for Ridgeland middle school is Barack Obama. Of the 441 voters, Obama grabbed 376 of them.
