People Waiting Up to 3 Hours to Take Part in Advance Voting

»  Comments | Post a Comment

5pm Update: At the voter registration office on Eisenhower in Savannah, long lines are reported way down the sidewalk. Elections officials say they will cut off voting for those already waiting at 5. Everyone who's in line by then will be allowed to vote tonight. It's estimated to take at least an hour. Anyone who arrives after 5 will not be able to vote until Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Local, state and federal lawmakers are calling for Gov. Perdue and Secretary of State Karen Handel to extend early voting through Monday, including the weekend, to give Georgia voters an opportunity to cast their ballots in a historic election that already has seen a record turnout.

At the Savannah Civic Center, one of four locations offering advanced voting on Friday, there were reports of wait-times taking up to 3 hours to vote. Authorities say anyone in line by 4 p.m. Friday will get in to voter. Otherwise those after the cutoff will have to wait to vote until Tuesday, November 4. Wait times of about an hour or more were reported earlier this morning at the Voter Registration office on Eisenhower.

Georgia voters began voting Sept. 22. By early today, 1.77 million Georgians had cast ballots early, 31 percent of those eligible. Advance voting is scheduled to end statewide at 7 p.m. today.
