It's a real blend of employees putting their mark on the future Fellwood in West Savannah. From highly experienced to people trained by the Construction Apprentice Program, they're counting their lucky stars for a paycheck. "There are a number of employers on this site that have come from sites that have been disbanded or discontinued," says Sylvester Formey. More than 350 strong, most employees here have never worked on a green housing development.
There are high expectations with so many capable employees. "When things turn around and they will given the stimulus activities that have been sponsored by the federal government, state government as well as the city that you'll see a number of those folks go to other opportunities other work opportunities around the state as well as Savannah." Sylvester says they're banking on a win-win for everybody involved. These energy efficient apartments will bring together a unique neighborhood similar to the hands building the foundation. Average medium income, to people who can afford to pay higher rent will live here. "You won't see any variation in the unit look. The unit that you visited could very well be someone that qualifies under a Section 8 Voucher as well," says Formey. Then there's the social part in this plan…making it a beloved community. "We want youngsters to see examples of folks that go to work everyday. Teachers, policemen, firemen, business people living next door to folks that may have a need for support." Formey says people are already applying to live in Fellwood. The Department of Community Affairs is helping finance Fellwood under the Tax Credit Program. The City of Savannah is pitching in - paying for roads and sidewalks. There's some construction money coming from Suntrust Bank. The land was donated by the Housing Authority of Savannah.
