South Carolina transportation officials
want the state's drivers to slow down in work zones.
The state Department of Transportation says this week is
National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week.
As part of its campaign, the Transportation Department is
increasing public awareness of the need for caution while driving
and working to create a nationwide program for promoting work zone
safety.
More than 7,500 South Carolina crashes between 2003 and 2007
were work zone-related. The Transportation Department says most of
those crashes happened during the afternoon rush hour and because
motorists were driving too fast for conditions.
Since June 2006, Highway Patrol troopers focusing full-time on
work zone safety have issued more than 40,000 citations.
