A major movie is headed to Savannah, with a huge star leading the cast, bringing more than 250 jobs and millions of dollars.
Savannah, Tybee Island, and Chatham County leaders gathered in Chippewa Square this morning to discuss this area's first major movie in ten years.
This summer the Disney drama "The Last Song" will begin shooting. It's written by the same man who wrote "Nights in Rodanthe" and "The Notebook." The movie stars teen actress and singer Miley Cyrus, also known as Hannah Montana.
Our state was in a battle with North Carolina to get the movie. Georgia won because of the tax credits and sales tax exemptions it offers and for two other reasons.
"One the appropriate locations. Two, the level of local cooperation that they knew they would get from Savannah and Tybee and the county and from the state," says Jay Self with the city of Savannah.
"When I told my three year old daughter yesterday that Hannah Montana was coming to Tybee Island she was extremely excited. So it was the first time my little girl was excited about something I was doing in government," says Tybee Island Mayor Jason Buelterman.
The last big movie to shoot here was "The Legend of Bagger Vance" in 1999. Click here to see a list of all the movies and television shows shot here.
Who is Miley Cyrus?
If you ask any young person, they'll definitely know her. The television show "Hannah Montana" is what sparked Cyrus' rise to stardom. She plays a teenager whose alter ego is star pop singer Hannah Montana.
Cyrus went on to release albums, hold sold-out concerts, and act in movies. Her new Hannah Montana movie opens in theaters today.
Cyrus says she's always been lucky to play parts that relate to her and says that's not the case with her character in "The Last Song." Many of you have probably heard of her father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus.
