Plan forcing Sanford's hand on stimulus hits delay

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Plans to force Gov. Mark Sanford to seek $350 million in federal stimulus cash have hit an expected delay.

Camden Sen. Vincent Sheheen introduced a resolution Tuesday that would require Sanford to seek the federal funding. Sanford has said he would refuse the money unless it can be used to reduce state debt. The White House won't allow him to do that.

Sheheen asked that the measure be considered immediately by the full Senate, but Senate Rules Committee Chairman Larry Martin of Pickens objected. It's rare that such weighty issues bypass committees.

Sheheen's measure was sent to the Senate Finance Committee. The panel on Tuesday resumed work on its version of the budget as Sanford's allies in the Senate wrapped up work on their own version of the spending plan.
