BAXLEY, Ga. (AP) -Rayonier Inc. says it’s not closing its sawmill at Baxley after all.
The company previously planned to suspend operations at its Baxley and Eatonton mills because of a lack of demand for the lumber it produces for the home-building industry.
It reconsidered after the price of two-by-fours rose from $222 per 1,000 board feet to $240.
Rayonier plans to continue operating the Baxley mill but with only one shift. Fifty-seven of the mill's 137 workers will be laid off. The Eatonton mill was reduced to one shift in January and now employs 73.
