Southside Firefighters battle heavy smoke and flames at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church.
Parishioners at one local church are praying that the fire damage to their church is minimal tonight.
That's after an early evening fire at the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church on Diamond Causeway, just before The Landings on the island
Southside Fire firefighters worked to extinguish the fire that was on the kitchen side of the church.
The church's pastor tells News 3 that an employee was working to get ready for tomorrow's vacation Bible school and that's when she heard a loud pop. She went down the hall to turn the lights out and that's when she saw smoke.
They think it was a lightening strike near the kitchen and nursery area.
"I was watching television and my wife said the church is on fire and I thought she was not kidding and it was hard to believe and then when we got here, it's ah, the first reaction is that you're distraught by what you see happening, but this is a great congregation and we'll come together and do what we have to do to rebuild it,” says Pastor Jim Giddens of the Skidaway Island United Methodist Church.
As far as the Pastor Giddens knows, the sanctuary, which is under construction, was not damaged.
He says he's very thankful that nobody was injured.
