As kids prepare to head back to school over the next few weeks, one local group hopes to make a positive difference in area classrooms by getting parents more involved in their child's education.
Educational Leaders for Change (ELC) Collaborative (Educational Service Providers) will host the 5th Annual "BREAKTHROUGH: An Explosion of Parent Unity in the Community" starting this Saturday, August 8 through August 10. The three day event will encourage parents to "get involved" with children at home, at school, and in the community.
The collaborative needs the community's support and is asking you to join their "Walk for Positive Parenthood at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2009 from the Savannah Civic Center to the Board of Education. At 12:00 noon ELC Collaborative will convene at Beach High School's Richard Mole Auditorium for a Parent Symposium, brunch, and back-to-school supply distribution. The focus for this year's symposium is "Reclaiming and Redirecting young African American Males," with guest speaker, Mr. Miller Bargeron, Managing Partner, BOAN Consults and founder of the Conquerors Program. On Monday, August 10, parents all over the area are asked to drive with their lights on in support of the initiative.
