SAVANNAH, GA (August 5, 2009) – Savannah firefighters say a late afternoon lightning strike apparently started a fire at a house on E. 37th St. Wednesday.
No one was home when members of a construction crew noticed smoke coming from the roof of 647 E. 37th Street and called 911 just after 4p.m. Fire crews were able to contain the flames to the attic of the two-story wood home. The rest of the house did sustain some smoke and water damage. Firefighters on the scene say they believe a lightning bolt struck the house near the center of the roof along a ridge vent. The American Red Cross is assisting the one person who lived in the home with alternate living arrangements.
