After Governor Sonny Purdue asked school districts across the state to take furlough days, Superintendent, Dr. Thomas Lockamy, sent out an email survey to teachers inquiring about their desired furlough days.
More than half of the staff decided on option 1. The entire district will be closed on Tuesday, August 25th. The other two furlough days for teachers will be on November 4th (for most people in the district, except the superintendent and his secretary) and January 4th. Teachers and staff members will be taking 3 days off without pay while Dr. Lockamy and other administrative staff will be taking five days off.
A Chatham Association of Educators representative, Mr. Williams, says that these furloughs come during the worst time. The Chatham Association of Educators opposes the Governor's decision to implement furloughs. He requests that the district look at other options. He says other districts found alternative ways to cut costs.
The entire board voted in favor of the furlough dates and in favor of the entire consent agenda.
