Savannah Tech to Furlough Three Days

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Add Savannah Technical College to the list of agencies taking mandatory furloughs to cope with the state's growing budget shortfall. This fall, the institution will close for business and furlough employees three days- September 4, November 25 and December 23.

Savannah Tech President Kathy S. Love says the school's primary concern is to minimize the impact on instruction as much as possible. Only one date (November 25, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving) is a scheduled instructional day. Faculty will issue out-of-class assignments for that day.

The furloughs are expected to save more than $104,000 from their budget. Savannah Technical College expects another 4% cut and is planning for cuts of 6% and 8% this fiscal year. Last year’s budget cuts represented a $1.7M loss in state funding. Despite the budget cuts, the institution set an enrollment record this spring with 4,635 students attending, up 16.3% from last year.
