Early Morning Earthquake in South Carolina

An earthquake was felt moderately by many people in portions of Dorchester, Berkeley, Charleston, and Colleton Counties in South Carolina this morning. Some communities in which shaking was observed include Summerville, Ladson, Sangaree, Cottageville, West Ashley, North Charleston, and Moncks Corner. County warning point centers in the affected counties indicate no damage has been reported so far.

Moderate tremors were felt for about 3 to 5 seconds around 638 am...and were followed by a series of weaker secondary tremors. While no damage has been reported...those experiencing the earthquake reported hearing a loud explosion...similar to a large object striking a building. National weather service skywarn spotters near the epicenter reported that their houses shook moderately for about 5 seconds during the earthquake.

The national earthquake information center in Golden, Colorado indicates the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 3.2 and was located at 33.033 degrees north...80.159 degrees west or about 2 miles northeast of Summerville, South Carolina. This is also 4 miles west northwest of Ladson, South Carolina.
