Times will soon get tougher for school districts across the state as they’ll have to tighten their purse strings even more.
The state superintendent of schools, Kathy Cox, says she expects they'll have to cut another $39 million from school funding and that schools will have a “pretty rocky couple of years,” before funding for state education improves.
So, how will the cuts affect local school districts? David Fields, executive chief officer for Savannah-Chatham Schools, says it’s too soon to tell how individual districts will be affected.
Fields says Cox will have to go through her board, the Governor, the office of planning and budget and ultimately it will be up to the legislature and the governor to decide how that's allocated out amongst and between districts.
"Ultimately, it'll be up to the legislature and the governor to decided exactly how that's allocated out amongst and between districts,” explains Fields.
Fields says once they know how much will need to be cut or if certain programs are being cut, they'll take the appropriate actions.
