Savannah Sex Offender Captured

Savannah, Georgia – A man wanted by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force Atlanta Office on December 8, 2009 in Fulton County, Georgia.

Timothy Collins, 42, was being sought by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department on a warrant for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender after his release from state prison. Collins had been convicted of a 1994 sex offense which required him to register as a Sex Offender upon his release from prison. In 2007, he was convicted on another felony charge and was released from prison in March of 2009. Accordingly, Collins has to register as a Sex Offender with the Sheriff’s Department in the county in which he will reside. Upon his release from prison in March of 2009, Collins failed to register with the Chatham County Sheriff’s and the current warrant was issued.

In a joint investigation conducted by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department and the United States Marshals Savannah Office of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, numerous leads were generated that placed Collins in the Atlanta, Georgia area. An anonymous tip was received through the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department, Sex Offender Registry and Tracking web page, which also placed him in the Atlanta, Georgia area. This information was forwarded to the Marshals Atlanta Task Force to find Collins. Collins was located at a Fulton County mission. Collins was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Fulton County Jail to await his return to Chatham County.
