COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The drought in South Carolina is
officially over.
State climatologist Hope Mizzell said Wednesday a rainy fall was
just what South Carolina needed to refill and recharge lakes and
groundwater.
The state Drought Response Committee removed an incipient
drought declaration from nine counties. That's the lowest of four
drought stages. The committee had declared an end to the state's
nearly three-year drought in June, but the summer was drier than
usual.
But much of the state received up to 300 percent of normal
rainfall over the past 60 days. Mizzell said some areas of the state reported the wettest fall
on record. For example, Walhalla received nearly 28 inches of rain,
or 15 inches above normal.
Officials predict the wetter-than-usual weather will continue
through January.
