After receiving so much support from the community some soldiers from Hunter Army Airfield are giving back.
They're spending their down time helping others.
News Three’s Military Reporter Alice Massimi caught up with soldiers from 1-10 Aviation as they stopped by a senior citizens center.
It's not just about needlepoint and crafts at the Port Wentworth Senior Citizens Center...this week some of our nations heroes stopped in.
“It’s great! it cant be any nicer for them to take out time to come up here and do whatever they ask you to do you know,” says Johnny DeWitt who comes to the center everyday.
Most notably... these soldiers from 1-10 Aviation helped decorate the center’s Christmas tree.
“They helped us decorate and put our bows way up that we couldn't get to. Then we had some boxes we had to shift around so they moved their muscles to move the boxes around,” explains Sharon Rogers the Center’s Director.
For Private First Class Joshua Denney it's no big deal. He's happy to help in anyway he can.
“It's a different atmosphere. You know it brings you away from the day to day work call and pt, it just kind of gets you out and about and back into Savannah, “ says Denney.
He's one of roughly 25 soldiers from the unit spending their week volunteering.
“We just got back from deployment so there is not a lot going on. The aircraft are stationed up at Fort Drum so we have a lot of free time right now,” he explains.
“They entertain us,” says Wimm Gurgus also a daily visitor at the center, “playing this thing.”
This thing would be WII... and its creating some friendly competition.
“The score on bowling has been 256 and I made that but no one else had beat me so far but this gentleman over here I gave him the control and he got 10 strikes out of 10,” says DeWitt.
But he is not bitter... he's honored.
In addition to volunteering at the senior citizen center...soldiers also spent time at some areas schools.
