Southeast Georgia Nominees To Service Academies

Seventeen students nominated. Final selections announced next spring.

WASHINGTON, D.C.Congressman Jack Kingston (R-GA/01) announces that 17 students in the First Congressional District of Georgia have received nominations to United States service academies. The students were interviewed for consideration into the Class of 2014 by Congressman Kingston and the Military Academy Board. Interviews were conducted at the Inn at Blueberry Plantation in Alma on December 4, 2009.

Brian Calkins of Richmond Hill is a senior at Richmond Hill High School and was chosen as the Principal Nominee to the US Military Academy in West Point, New York. Calkins is a member of the RHHS Future Christian Athletes (FCA) and ROTC after-school drill team and volunteers his time as a lineman coach to the RHHS football team. Calkins is an Eagle Scout and leads the bible study in his youth group at Coastal Community Christian Church in Richmond Hill. He is the son of Elizabeth and Martin Calkins.

Randy Capocasale of Fleming is a graduate of Savannah Country Day School and a sophomore at Duke University. Capocasale was chosen as a Nominee to the US Military Academy in West Point, New York. Capocasale is a member of Duke University’s ROTC program. He is the son of Daria and Randolph Capocasale.

Scott Clark of Savannah is a senior at Benedictine Military School and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Military Academy in West Point, New York. He is a captain of the BMS cross country team and wrestling teams, a member of the track team, editor of the BMS yearbook staff and a member of the BMS JROTC program. Clark is a member of the National Honors Society, volunteers at Fort Pulaski and has served on the Army Reserve’s teen panel for two years. He is the son of Ellen and Grant Clark.

Dajah Davis of Richmond Hill is a senior at Richmond Hill High School and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Military Academy in West Point, New York. She is a member of the RHHS basketball team, marching band color guard, JROTC and FCA. Davis is also president of the youth ministry at Bethel Missionary Church and is a member of the women’s ministry and choir. Davis volunteers her time at the Red Cross and Total Family Health Clinic at Hunter Army Air Field. She is the daughter of Sophia and Gregory Davis.

Logan Glover of Midway is a senior at Liberty County High School and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Military Academy in West Point, New York. Glover is a member of the LCHS Interact Club, Vice-President of the student council, and a member of the LCHS soccer and cross country teams. He is an Eagle Scout and is a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Award. He is the son of Jennifer and Phillip Neal.

Scott Hancock of Valdosta is a senior at Lowndes County High School and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Military Academy in West Point, New York. He has already received a letter of assurance from the US Military Academy. Hancock is a member of the Key Club, Beta Club, the LCHS baseball team and is student council president. He is the son of Sue and Kenneth Hancock.

Michael Spragio of Saint Marys is a senior at Camden County High School and was chosen as the Principal Nominee to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Spragio is a member of the National Honors Society, the CCHS chapter of Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and plays offensive tackle on the CCHS football team. He also volunteers his time at his church’s Angel Food Drive. He is the son of Hilary and Royal Spragio.

Zachary Cornelius of Savannah is a senior at Savannah Arts Academy and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Cornelius is a member of the SAA Beta Club, Historical Society, Explore Post and wrestling and soccer teams. Cornelius volunteers his time with Faithful Servant Missions where he goes on mission trips to Costa Rica. He is employed with Pro Shine Auto Detailing. He is the son of Jackie and Dennis Cornelius.

Matthew Howard of Baxley is a senior at Appling County High School and has been chosen by the US Naval Academy to attend the US Naval Academy Preparatory School. Howard is a member of the Varsity Football Team, Beta Club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He is the son of Kim Quinn and Wade Howard.

William Burnette of Hazlehurst is a senior at Jeff Davis County High School and was chosen as the Principal Nominee to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Burnette is a member of the JDCHS Future Farmers of America (FFA), basketball team, Beta Club and works as a certified lifeguard at the Appling County Recreation Department. He is the son of Laura and John Burnette.

Kristopher Crawford of Hinesville is a senior at Liberty County High School and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is a member of the LCHS football and track teams, FCA, Interact Club and ROTC. Crawford is a member of the youth and mass choir groups at Liberty Christian Fellowship Church and volunteers his time at the Shuman Recreation and Youth Center. He is the son of Delores and Vincent Crawford.

Marc Stanley of Richmond Hill is a 2009 graduate of Richmond Hill High school and received an Air Force Academy Falcon Foundation Scholarship to attend Northwestern Preparatory School in Crestline, California. He was chosen as a Nominee to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Stanley is a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He is the son of Elisabeth and Ballard Jones.

Demetrius Stinson of Hinesville is a 2009 graduate of Liberty County High School where he received a track and academic scholarship to attend Clayton State University in Atlanta where he is currently a freshman. Stinson was chosen as a Nominee to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He has already received a letter of assurance from the US Air Force Academy. Stinson is a member of the CSU Impact Club where he participates in a mentoring program and is also a member of the CSU Gentlemen’s and Ladies First Club, another community service based club. He is the son of Lucretia and Douglas Stinson.

Zachary Taylor of Richmond Hill is a senior at Richmond Hill High School and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Taylor is a member of the RHHS JROTC and serves on it’s Radar and Drill Teams. He is a member of the Beta Club, National Honors Society and is a member of the youth ministry at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church. He is the son of Aimee and Ronald Taylor.

Adam Uelmen of Valdosta is a senior at Lowndes County High School and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Uelmen is a member of the LCHS JROTC and Mu Alpha Theta, a mathematics honor society. He is a member of the youth ministry at Christ Fellowship Church in Valdosta and volunteered his time by helping with construction of the church’s youth group room and Operation Christmas Child. He is the son of Marjorie and Kurt Uelmen.

Ian Brissey of Saint Simons Island is a senior at Glynn Academy and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Brissey is a member of the GA Drama Club, Chess Club, Beta Club, Science Club and a member of the cross country team. He is the son of Rachel and Thomas Brissey.

Sean Hughes of Savannah is a senior at Memorial Day School and was chosen as a Nominee to the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Hughes is a member of the MDS Drama Club, basketball team, Honors Society and is in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. He is the son of Sandra and Michael Hughes.

“This year’s students are an outstanding group of young people and should be commended for their dedication; it takes a tremendous amount of hard work to achieve their level of success,” said Congressman Kingston. “I am proud to see the leadership qualities and enthusiasm displayed by these young men and women and wish them all well in their future endeavors.”

The United States service academies will announce formal appointments for the class of 2014 next spring.
