Williams Will Go To Prison
SENTENCING UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.--Judge Perry Brannen sentences Kevin Williams to maximum for involuntary manslaughter....10 years with credit for time served. Williams has spent more than two and-a-half years in jail since India Boston's death in June of 2007. That means he'll have nearly another 7 and-a-half years in prison. Judge Brannen also sentenced him to one year on the charge of making a false statement. That will be served concurrently.
The defense argued the sentence should be time served, that Williams had been punished enough and he should be eligible for first offender status. Judge Brannen disagreed saying he must be sent to the penetentiary because someone died.
Williams is guilty of involuntary manslaughter. That’s the decision of a Chatham County jury today, ending the trial of Kevin Williams who was, originally, charged with murder. Williams fired a gun inside Roscoe’s Kitchen in Savannah back on June 8th, 2007. The bullet hit 14-year old India Boston in the head, killing her. Williams has always maintained the gun accidentally discharged as he was moving it. But after testing by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation that it said showed the gun operated properly, Williams was charged with murder.
After two days of testimony this week, however, Judge Perry Brannen ruled there was not enough evidence for a murder conviction and allowed the jury to consider lesser charges.
The prosecutor asked for a week to prepare for sentencing. The judge refused, saying he's heard enough and is ready to sentence this afternoon.
