FORT STEWART, Ga. -- With just nine days until Christmas, some Fort Stewart soldiers won't get to spend the holidays with their families: instead they're headed overseas.
On Wednesday night, soldiers from the Army's 141st Field Artillery of the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team said goodbye to their families. They're being deployed to Iraq to support operations there.
The Henderson family is used to this. This is the second time Staff Sgt. Shane Henderson will be serving overseas during the holidays.
"Can't really think about it too much. Just know that we did Christmas before I left and you know spent time with as much family as I could before we left and just going to look forward to next year," said Staff Sgt. Henderson.
"At least next year he'll be home for the holidays. But like everybody says, no time is a good time for him to leave. So whether it be Christmas or he misses new year's, he'll be home before we know it," said his wife Georgette.
As troops from our area leave for Iraq, the first wave of Marines headed to Afghanistan left North Carolina Wednesday. They're part of President Barack Obama's planned military increase in the area. In all, 30,000 troops are being sent to Afghanistan as part of a new war strategy there.
