SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The bad economy continues taking a toll, as two Downtown Savannah businesses close their doors for good.
The Downtown Athletic Club and Vanilla Day Spa, located in the same building at East Broughton Street and Bull Street, both shut down this weekend.
The owner of Vanilla Day Spa tells News 3 they tried to stay open as long as possible, but bankruptcy became their only option.
Customers said they're sad to see the businesses close, but they're not sure what happens to memberships and gift certificates that have already been paid for.
"I know that they've been in business for a very long time, so you know it's kind of hurtful to see businesses going down especially the way the economy is these days. At the same time it's also unfortunate for the people who get stuck like my situation where we're kind of out of luck is what I'm guessing," said Cody Rentschler, who said his parents had given his girlfriend a four-month membership to DAC and given them a $100 spa gift card.
Megan Sheehan stopped by Tuesday to get a spa gift certificate for her mom for Christmas, but left disappointed.
"It's really sad because I work in the retail business, too. I mean, so I know how hard it is with the economy. But it's really upsetting, because I love downtown and all the businesses down here," she said.
The Kayak Café, located in the same building, is still open for business. Managers said they're sad to see their neighbors close, but want to let customers know they're here to stay.
Vanilla Day Spa is trying to work with another spa so customers can redeem their gift certificates. If you have a gift card to Vanilla Day Spa, call (912) 232-0040. You're asked to leave your name, phone number, and gift card number, and someone will get back to you. If the voice mail is full, they ask you to keep trying back.
