20-Year Old Kidnapping Solved

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Last night, police in California arrested a 72-year-old man and charged him with the 1989 kidnapping...of two of his grandchildren.

Now those children, who are now full-grown adults, are about to meet the parents they haven't seen in almost 20 years.

Debbie Baskin/Mother: "It was a blessing to know they were alive and well."

Debbie Baskin reacted to the news Wednesday night that her daughter and son had been found after being abducted two decades ago.

Mark Baskin/Father: "In time I guess you get a little less hopeful and it would kind of go up and down."

Sgt. Dan Goodwin/Rutherford County, Tennessee Sheriff's Dept.: "We're here to affect the extradition of Marvin L. Maple for the 1989 kidnapping of his grandchildren.”

In San Jose, California, police have arrested 72-year-old Marvin Maple. He's charged with abducting his own grandchildren in March of 1989. Back then,
Katherine Baskin was eight years old and her brother Robert was age 7. Maple and his wife accused their daughter and son-in-law of abusing the two children,
but when Tennessee authorities found no evidence to support those claims police say the Maples disappeared with their grandchildren.

In the 90s, there were several sightings in Northern California after the children were profiled on the TV show, "Unsolved Mysteries".

Last week, Tennessee officials made up computer generated photos of Katherine and Robert showing how they might look twenty years later, after officials got
a tip that the two might be in California.

Police say they're now known as Jennifer and Jonathan Bunting, 28 and 27, both living in San Jose.

Police say Maple, whose wife has since died, changed his name to Bunting, raising the children as his own, home-schooling them, eventually sending them
to college and always staying one step ahead of the law... until this week.

SOT Sgt. Dan Goodwin: "The San Jose Police Department actually came knocking on Mr. Bunting's or Mr. Maples' door 19 years, 11 months and one day after the kidnapping occurred."

Police say they're not sure how Maples was able to come up with new identities for the children, or why they never tried to contact their parents. But, investigators point out that they were 7 and 8 when they were abducted, and they don't know what their grandfather told them about their parents.

MORE ON THE STORY:
The parents of the kidnapped children, who have since moved to Georgia, are heading to California to see their children for the first time since they were taken two decades ago. Before they left, they spoke with WSAV's Holly Bounds. Find out what the parents had to say.
