Two Robert Smalls Middle School students have been charged with bringing a weapon to school after a BB gun was recovered from a student’s backpack Tuesday morning.
A school resource officer was contacted by a concerned parent this morning after their child reported seeing another student with what appeared to be a handgun in class yesterday. During the course of the ensuing investigation, it was learned that a 13-year old student had brought a BB gun to school, both yesterday and today.
The student allegedly discharged the BB gun several times at the feet of another student while riding the bus to school this morning. No one was struck, and no injuries were sustained during the incident. Upon arriving at school, the 13-year old student handed the weapon over to a 15-year old classmate.
Upon identifying both students, the weapon (an AirSoft semi-automatic BB gun) was located in the backpack of the 15-year old. Both students have since been suspended and will be petitioned in family court for Carrying a Weapon on School Property. The 13-year old student will also face an additional charge of Assault and Battery for the incident of discharging the weapon on the bus.
