A pregnant eastern Pennsylvania woman blacked out behind the wheel while heading to a doctor's appointment. Thankfully her eight-year-old son, who was in the car at the time, stepped in and helped her safely pull out of traffic and call for help.
Felix Pepin is more than just a big brother, he's his family's guardian angel.
Two weeks ago, the shy 3rd grader did the extraordinary, pulling off an act of such maturity and bravery that it likely saved both his mom's and baby brother's lives.
Mother Dahianara Sanchez says "the guy in the ambulance said your son's a hero."
Still pregnant at the time, Dahianara Sanchez was on her way home from a prenatal checkup. Felix was in the backseat. While driving her blood sugar dropped dangerously low sending her into diabetic shock.
Dahianara says "I told Felix, I can't see at all - and I don't remember anything after that."
Felix says "it looked like she passed out. I felt like we were going to crash."
Terrified but desperate not to crash, young Felix calmly talked his mother through a mile and half of intersections, pedestrians and traffic, telling her which way to steer, until he could find somewhere safe for them to park.
Felix says "I told her which lane to go in, which way to turn left or right."
Dahianara says "thru red lights, stop signs, over the busy mini highway all of that knowing we went through that is the scariest part of it all."
Nearly 20 blocks later, Felix finally found a place with no cars, guided his mom to pull over.
Felix says "I put gear shift if park and got my mom's blackberry and called 9-1-1."
Felix's dad rewarded his son with dinner at the boy's favorite restaurant.
Mom later gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Valentines Day.
It's one happy ending to a story that's sure to be a family favorite at bedtime for years to come.
