COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is Deciding how handle extended jobless benefits and a $25 weekly increase in checks contained in a $787 billion federal stimulus package.
Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said Wednesday the republican governor is still sorting out what role he will play in those decisions. Sawyer said the governor is still working his way through questions about handling stimulus spending in the state.
The South Carolina Employment Security Commission said it is up to the governor to sign off on those benefit requests.
South Carolina's 9.5 percent unemployment rate in December was the nation's third highest. The state is paying out about $29 million weekly in regular and extended benefits to about 140,000 people.
