Congressman Jack Kingston (R/GA-1) today announced a $1 million grant for Chatham Area Transit (CAT) for upgrades to the system’s fareboxes. The funding comes from the Department of Transportation.
“This funding will provide for much needed upgrades to CAT’s fareboxes,” Congressman Kingston said. “With tight budgets and energy costs fluctuating, we need mass transit systems like CAT.”
The fareboxes currently being used face constant breakdowns, resulting in loss of revenue. The grant will be used to implement a smart card technology which will assist in passenger transfers – something the current system cannot accommodate. A similar technology is currently being used by Atlanta’s MARTA.
“The Chatham County Commissioners appreciate Congressman Jack Kingston’s efforts in obtaining this grant,” Chatham County Commission Chairman Pete Liakakis said. “This funding will help secure vitally needed fare boxes that will be capable of issuing transfers for the many riders of the system. This money is needed for the overall modernization of the Chatham Area Transit system.”
