2008-2009 has been a year of historic events. For one we witnessed the election of President Barrack Obama. Here in Savannah history continues to be made as the city sees its first African American Postmaster. When you visit the Fahm Street Post Office branch you will probably see Barbara King working alongside mail clerks and doing what's necessary to stay ahead. King started her career with the U.S. Postal Service in Birmingham, Alabama 23 years ago.
She shared her feeling with News Three about being named the 1st African American Postmaster in Savannah. “It is definitely an honor being named postmaster of Savannah. Our commitment. We are dedicated and committed to serving our customers. Our employees are loyal and we're dedicated to the success of this organization." King understands the challenges ahead. She has served as a Mail Processing Clerk, Manger of Customer Relations, and was Postmaster in Gardendale , Alabama. Her top priority is quality service. “Presently we are realigning some of our city routes so that we may provide constant consistent daily delivery to our customers and improve customer service. We've also adjusted some of our collection box times in order to get the mail to the plant earlier. Again all of this is to improve service throughout the Postal Service." An Installation Ceremony for Postmaster King will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Savannah State University's Jordan Building Auditorium.
