The City of Savannah makes history Monday, Jan. 5, with the first day of curbside recycling collection. Monday pickup covers most of Savannah's southside.
Recycling pickup trucks will be in the Sweetwater Station subdivision, located at Grove Point Road and Hwy 204/Abercorn Extension, around 10 a.m. City trucks will drop off recyclables at the Pratt transfer station, 101 Kahn Industrial Court off Ogeechee Road, beginning around 3 p.m.
Representatives from the City's Sanitation Department, along with community recycling advocates, will rally at the corner of Abercorn and Mall Blvd. from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. tomorrow Jan. 3 to draw attention to the City's rollout of curbside recycling.
Over the past month, 96-gallon, black and yellow recycling carts have been delivered to 48,000 households throughout Savannah. The carts are our citizens' connection to Savannah's state-of-the-art curbside system, called "single-stream recycling." Single-stream recycling, a new technology, is the most user-friendly of all recycling systems. It allows residents to drop a variety of clean recyclables -- plastic and glass bottles, metal cans, paper and cardboard -- into one recycling container, with no sorting required.
As citizens await the start of curbside recycling collection, they are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the process, and create a system within their homes for separation of household trash from recyclable materials. Recycling carts were accompanied by a packet that included a handy recycling guide, a pickup schedule, and other useful information. Residents can learn more by visiting savannahga.gov or calling 311.
