Rally for Savannah Recycling Program

"In our home we try to reduce our waste to as little as possible or even nothing and so coming out here is helping them understand the bigger picture for the community and the role that what they do for their own lives plays in the larger world,” Bethany Jewell said.

We hear a lot these days about "going green" -- a move many of you already take to be a better friend to the environment.

Starting Monday in Savannah, it won't be a choice anymore when it comes to recycling. The city is officially kicking off its curbside recycling program.

To get folks excited about what some reluctant neighbors might view as a chore, sanitation workers and volunteers alike lined the corners of Abercorn and Mall Boulevard Saturday to rally behind the cause.

"We're advertising in the newspaper, advertising on billboards and even coming to the streets of Savannah to make sure they know recycling starts January 5th,” Recycling and Litter Services Director Curtis Sanders said.

Bethany Jewell brought her children along. She thought their presence would serve as a teaching tool for them and those driving by.

"In our home we try to reduce our waste to as little as possible or even nothing and so coming out here is helping them understand the bigger picture for the community and the role that what they do for their own lives plays in the larger world,” Jewell said.

Sanders says the family representation at the rally is a symbol for how to make this effort a true success.

"It starts with the family. Any great movement we've had in America starts with the family. So we want to get all the families involved to recycle today,” he said.

Sanders asks you to please remove your recycling bin from the curbside after pickup. If you have any questions, call the city at 311.
