Today was a first for the city of Savannah as collection for the curbside recycling program kicked off. It's recycling made easy for neighbors. Everything that can be recycled can all go into one bin.. that includes plastics, cardboard and paper. Recycling and Litter Services Director Curtis Sanders says he's pleased with participation so far. "We are experiencing right now at about a 50-percent participation rate on the southside of Savannah", says Sanders. "So, I definitely want to put the rest of Savannah on notice and see if they can top the southside with 50-percent."
Today's pickup covers most of Savannah's southside. Recyclables will be picked up twice a month. If your refuse gets taken out Monday or Tuesday it will be the first and third Monday and Tuesday. If it's Wednesday and Thursday it will be second and fourth Wednesday and Thursday.
City trucks will drop off recyclables at the Pratt transfer station off of Ogeechee Road. Sanders explains the process. "As far as sorting, we have a contract with Pratt in which we deliver all of our recyclables to them and they do the sorting and then from there they'll actually take those products and sell them to manufacturers who'll produce in products which will start that cycle back again to sell them to consumers."
Sanders says in the end, everyone has to do their share. "Recycling is just a part of it. We also have to be able to reduce and reuse items because the key point is to make the environment as healthy as possible."
If you forget what can be recycled, the city has placed stickers on all of the carts to let you know what's acceptable. If you have any questions, call the city at 3-1-1.
