For more than five years now, area veterans have worked on getting a World War Two Monument erected in Savannah.
The Veterans Council had their heart set on Oglethorpe Square as the location, but some historic preservation groups felt the monument was not appropriate for the area. So about a month ago the city broached the possibility of placing it on River Street.
The Veterans Council approved of the change and yesterday the council unanimously approved the change.
So what's next?
News Three's Alice Massimi has more on some of the new hurdles facing the completion of the project.

Jimmy Ray's dad a World War Two Vet and a Savannah Native had hoped he'd live to see Savannah's World War Two Monument but three years ago...already two years into the planning process he passed away.
“In 2008 in the Veterans Council and other military organizations we've lost 35 World War Two Vets that won’t see it,” explains Ray.
One of the reasons why the Veterans Council agreed to change the location of the monument to here on River Street.
While this was not the veterans’ first choice for a monument there are many connections between this area and savannah's contributions to World War Two.
“Liberty ships, Union Bag Company was making boxes for sea rations, Great Dane was making trailers,” says Ray.
Now comes the tricky part, hashing out yet again what the monument will look like.
“I had expressed concerns about the materials. We are going to try and work on that. You want something that is durable but also high quality,” says Savannah City Manager Michael Brown.
Brown has worked with the Veterans Council since the beginning and is hoping the ground can soon be broke for this monument
But Ray says they're not willing to make many more concessions.
“We’ve made 15 already so if we have to make one or two we are not going to make everybody happy,” says Ray.
With time bearing down on them Ray hopes the monument will be erected before another member of the greatest generation passes away.

They are also working on raising money. If you would like to donate to the memorial click here:
