HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency will study the coast of North Carolina and South Carolina as part of a national project to help communities make good
environmental decisions.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports EPA officials are in South Carolina this week to get public comment.

Dorsey Worthy of the EPA's Office of Research and Development says the idea is not to stop development, but to do it responsibly. The study will focus on ecosystems that provide clean air and water
and productive soil.

The agency says coastal areas of the Carolinas face pressure from growing populations and climate change.

The EPA will also study the Tampa Bay, Fla., area, areas in the Midwest and Oregon's Willamette River Basin.
