After a 30 minute meeting between his attorneys and Senate Democratic leaders, it now looks like Roland Burris has the OK from Capitol Hill to take the job.
After more than a week of bickering and hand-wringing over his selection, Monday Senate Democrats cleared the way for Roland Burris to fill the seat left behind by President-elect Barack Obama.
Mr. Burris said "I ask for your support and prayers so that I may work with you."
This is a major reversal for Democratic leaders who initially balked at the idea of approving any appointment from embattled Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, accused by federal agents of trying sell or trade the vacant senate seat to the highest bidder.
Burris has said repeatedly he was never involved with any alleged scheme.
Mr. Burris said "my motivation is to serve, is pure and had nothing to do with the scandal that proceeded my appointment. I'm taking seat because of my love and commitment to the people of Illinois."
The new Senator-designate from Illinois will likely be sworn-in and seated later this week, barring any unexpected objections from Senate Republicans.
