When the temperatures drop below freezing, it's time for you to start thinking about your pipes and plants.
Pipes
Teddy Wells with Home Depot tells us when it comes to your pipes, drip water from them, your outside pipes as well as your inside pipes. It'll help prevent them from cracking.
Another way to keep pipes from getting too cold is by wrapping pipe insulation around them.
Teddy also offers advice for those of you with pools. "Some people run their pool pumps every twelve hours during the cold time. It won't hurt them to run it all night."
Staying Warm
If you're heating your house with space heaters, remember to keep them away from curtains, drapes and other flammable material.
You can also keep your home warm by using light switch sealers, weather stripping, and caulk. They all keep cold air from getting in.
Plants
Lawn and garden expert Ed Poenicke tells us to cover any soft or delicate flowers to keep them from getting damaged. "What you're holding is an old sheet, an old blanket. Anything with a cloth does fine because you can lay that over and moisture will not build up underneath it and it helps give you protection."
You can also use pine straw and leaves, not much, just a two-inch layer over. During the daytime, take it off. Ed says don't cover your plants with plastic. That could make things worse.
